Record Breaking lbs of School Supplies Collected
On Friday, July 24th - Sunday, July 26th United Way of Hernando County's 9th Annual Stuff the Bus event took place at all Hernando Publix and Wal-Mart stores. United Way also increased corporate participation this year with providing Drop Box locations for the month of July at all local Regions Banks, The YMCA, Suncoast Urgent Care, Office Depot, Walgreens, and SunTrust Bank.
United Way is pleased to report over 757 hours were logged by 225 Hernando teachers and community members who dedicated their time advocating for this local education initiative.
“Nine years ago, United Way’s Stuff the Bus consisted of three bus sites and a handful of volunteers,” explained United Way’s Executive Director/CEO Angela Bonfardino. “Now with eleven sites and multiple drop box locations, it’s simply amazing. United Way understands that a large majority of our schools and families struggle to supply their students with even the most basic tools for the school year,” Bonfardino continued. “That is why United Way is proud to continue hosting this collaborative effort. If it weren’t for everyone joining together and doing their part- the volunteers not allowing the weather to effect the event (it was a wet one!), the bus locations marketing their great sales on school supplies that weekend, and our Hernando community embracing the giving culture- we wouldn’t of had nearly as great of an impact that we did.”
Hernando's collaborative efforts helped raise a record breaking 6,039 lbs of school supplies that stocked over 163 local classrooms in Hernando County just in time for the new 2015-2016 school year.
Contributions included:
- 15,920 black, blue & red pens
- 2,838 spiral notebooks
- 989 packs of colored pencils
- 7,850 pencil cap erasers
- 1,785 packs of crayons
- 2,816 packs of pencils
- 1,774 composition notebooks
- 1,480 glue sticks
- and so much more!
