Save the Date: February 17th is “KICK” Start to Early Literacy

United Way’s Annual Kickball Tournament

Looking for a “kicking” good time? United Way of Hernando County is excited to announce their 3rd Annual Kickball Tournament, “KICK” Start to Early Literacy will be held at Anderson Snow Park on February 17th. The proceeds raised from this annual event benefit United Way’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) program, which supplies each Hernando child enrolled with a free book every month until the age of five.

“Studies show that a child’s first 5 years of life are when they develop the foundation of all future learning,” United Way of Hernando County’s Executive Director, Angie Bonfardino-Walasek announced during the opening ceremony at last year’s tournament. “The books through the DPIL program are distributed at no cost to the families and pre-school children are enrolled regardless of their economic status. As this popular program continues to grow, so does Hernando’s waiting list and need for funding. That’s why United Way is on a constant mission to advocate and raise dollars to invest in these local programs.” Last year’s Annual Kickball Tournament allowed United Way to add an additional 200 children a month onto the program.

United Way is putting a twist on this year’s event and adding a “gently used” book drive to the mix in hopes of loading up the Little Free Library (LFL) that United Way installed at Anderson Snow Park. This free book exchange stand is located at the playground and can be found stocked with books all year long. So bring your family, bring some books, and bring your appetite to enjoy this fun filled day and community BBQ!
