Suncoast Credit Union Invests in Early Literacy
$5,000 Granted to United Way’s Imagination Library Program

Spring Hill, FL – April 13, 2022 – Suncoast Credit Union, a proud supporter of early literacy, has awarded a generous grant of $5,000 towards United Way of Hernando County’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This popular early literacy initiative provides enrolled Hernando County children with a free book in the mail every month from birth-age 5, regardless of the family’s economic status, in preparation of kindergarten readiness. Suncoast Credit Union and United Way’s partnership began in 2018, making this is the 5th consecutive year Suncoast has awarded the United Way for their primary focus on Education for Youth and Community Support & Engagement.

United Way’s Imagination Library currently provides 1,000 books to enrolled Hernando County preschool children each month. Suncoast’s $5,000 grant will sponsor 192 local children on the program for one full year.

The academic success of children in their later years depends heavily upon their kindergarten readiness. The first few years of education and preparedness are the most crucial to establishing a solid foundation from which children can adapt to school systems and learn successfully. During this period, children develop primary skills that form the foundations of reading, counting, and social interaction. This leads to higher graduation rates and enhanced productivity in adult life.

The Imagination Library program also encourages parent participation by reading aloud to their children. Parents play the most powerful and influential role in their children’s lives and early literacy capabilities. United Way of Hernando County’s most recent “READ to ME” Parent/Caregiver Survey shows that 93% of caregivers believe that by receiving free, high quality & age appropriate books every month it has enhanced their child’s early learning and literacy skills. Reading tips are included with every book, giving parents the opportunity to engage with their children and grow their comprehension skills. This ensures quality learning at home which helps set the stage for literacy success in children’s early years.

Suncoast Credit Union’s continuous support makes it possible for United Way of Hernando County to enhance its ongoing efforts with kindergarten readiness and parent engagement.
